Custom candles with water slides! The step-by-step process is below.
Water slides are wonderful for creating some decals and adding them to different surfaces: it can be on nails, mugs and candles! Above all, it is important to know that water slides, as their name suggests, use water to transfer them to a surface, so keep that on mind with this proyect.
Learn how to create custom candles using Water Slides with your favorite cutting machine. Both Cricut and Silhouette Cameo machines work if they have the print and then cut feature available.
Supplies Needed
- Inkjet water slide paper (transparent)
- rust-oleum semi gloss Spray
- Candles
- Cutting Machine
- Light Grip mat
- Cotton towel
First, find a design HERE and upload it to the canvas. Then select it and go to offset to add one. The idea here is to create a border as with stickers to cut them easily with the print then cut function. Make sure to not leave any pieces on the inside created by the offset.
In cricut design space you can remove them by using the contour function. Just select the parts to hide them. On the other hand, in silhouette studio right click on the image and select release the compound path of the offset. this way you can take the section and delete them.
Take the sheet and print the images on the shiny part of them. For this project it is not necessary to mirror the design. we must adjust the design with the print then cut setting and iff possible, change the print quality to “high”.
Once the design is printed, after sending it to cut, spray it. Use rust-oleum semi gloss clear. This is a protective coating that will seal the design. Apply a light first coat and let it dry for 20 minutes and then apply two more coats with the same drying time in between. Make sure it is completely and totally dry before sending it to be cut.
Apply the water slide
First of all, take a bowl and fill it with cold water. Place the decal in the bowl and leave it there for about 30 seconds to a minute. The paper will curl and then flatten automatically and on its own, once that happens we know it is ready to transfer.
After that, it is possible to transfer the decal with two processes. The first is to take the whole decal and place it on the candle. There start to gently slide the backing paper. The second is to slide the backing paper into the water and then gently move the water slide to the surface of the candle.
In both cases, apply light pressure at the end and use a towel to remove excess moisture. Let it dry overnight or use a hairdryer at not too high a temperature for faster drying.
