Wood blanks projects
On the dollar tree, you can find a lot of different wooden blanks. With this kind of blanks, it is possible to make nice signs for home decor, using some vinyl. Here will be four different ways to use dollar tree wood blanks.
Supplies Needed
- Expression vinyl transfer tape
- Permanent vinyl
- Black walnut stain
- Tape measure
1. Single sing
To do this, take a square wooden tray, measure it before you do anything, and size the design in the software, make sure it fits properly. Next, cover the surface of the wooden box with some black walnut stain. Let it dry, and finally stick the vinyl to the surface, for this it is recommended to use expression vinyl transfer tape, as it will not pull off the stain or paint. As a result you will be able to make a super nice sign!
2. Thin/ wider sign
Extra supplies
- Wood glue
- Clamps
In this case, take three wooden trays, and glue them with enough wood glue, putting some clamps to make pressure so that it sticks well. Let it dry for about 50 minutes. This way you can make a thin sign or a wider one. Next, measure the surface to size the design. After that, take the stain and cover the surface, let it dry. Finally, apply the decal with some expression vinyl transfer tape and voila!
3. Painted wood sign
Really with dollar tree wood blanks, it is possible to create many home decor projects! If you are looking for more of paint look instead of a stain look sign, try this project!
Extra supplies
- Wood glue
- Clamps
- Mod podge
- White chalk paint
- Paintbrush
Firs, similarly to the last project glue three wood trays, put some stain on the top surface of the blank. Secondly, apply the design like a decal over the wood blank, and instead of stopping there, put a light coat of mod podge over the vinyl design to seal it.
Once the mod podge is dry, apply two coats of white chalk paint over the surface, paint it on lightly with a brush or makeup sponge. Be sure to cover all the edges, otherwise the design will not look well. Wait until the paint is 50% to 60% dry to remove the vinyl and expose the design.
It is not recommended to use this technique with a huge decal or a design with small letters becuase it will be difficult to remove.
4. Customized spatula
Supplies Needed
- Flat spatula
- Permanent vinyl
- Mod podge
Get a flat white dollar tree spatula. Prevoiously measure it out and then cut out a design on permanent vinyl. Stick the decal on the spatula and finally, put some mod podge on top, to keep the vinyl from moving. As a result you’ll have a custom spatula for just a few bucks!
5. Trivet sign
Supplies needed
- Trivet
- Permanent vinyl
- Mod podge
Get a trivet, and measure it as well. Cut the design but in this case mirror it, to place it on the back of the blank so that when you flip the trivet over and use it you are not directly over the vinyl. Subsequently, add some mod podge onto the vinyl just to make sure it will be possible to wipe it off if it Is necessary.
6. Book stack
Supplies needed
- Books
- Paint
- Hot glue
- permanent vinyl
- Ribbon
Go to the dollar tree book section, and pick up some books, as many as you have family members, to make a stack of books. Try to choose books that are the same size. Paint the books to change their color if necessary, and then measure the spine of the book, to cut out the names and make sure they fit. After that, glue and justify the names on the left side. Add a ribbon by gluing it on, you can also add some other detail!
7. Canvas customized with HTV vinyl
Supplies needed
- Crafter canvas
- Black walnut stain
- Flathead screwdriver
- Pliers
- HTV vinyl
- Heat press
- Hot glue
First of all, get a square crafter canvas, make sure you get the ones with a thicker side, because they have wood inside, and the idea here is to use it as a frame. Take a flathead screwdriver and some pliers to remove the staples on the backside. Next, apply some stain to the outside of the frame, and let it dry. Meanwhile, measure the piece of canvas and cut out the design on heat transfer vinyl, mirror the design.
Moreover, trim a little off the piece of canvas that we originally removed, keeping in mind that it must fit the wooden frame to glue it on at the end. Use the heat press at 325 degrees for 25-30 seconds to apply the HTV vinyl. Then just take some hot glue and put it on the frame to stick it on the canvas, and finally, trim all the excess. Absolutely simple and wonderful result!
8. Customized glass with etching cream
Above all the etching cream is permanent on the glass, so it is perfect for this type of project, the glasses will be food safe and dishwasher safe! For this project go to the glassware section of the dollar tree and pick up some blank glass. In this case, it is a plate!
Supplies needed
- Glass blanks
- Etching cream
- Vinyl
- paintbrush
Creating the stencil
Firstly, measure the center of the plate, so to create a design that fits on it. Upload the image of preference on Cricut design space or the design software of choice. Insert a circle with the size of the center of the plate. Put the image over the circle, sizing it.
After that, select only the design, and hit first on “welded”, then select the welded piece and the circle and click “slice” at the bottom, and as a result that will create a circular stencil. Finally cut it out in some vinyl.
Customizing the glass
Most importantly, when the design is on the plate grab the etching cream found at any craft store, and with a regular paintbrush, put a coat of the etching cream, over the stencil. Let it set for about 10 minutes. Once that is done run it under hot water, to remove the initial etching cream, and finally peel the stencil off. Certainly, this has more longevity than vinyl on this type of project!
You can also apply the same technique for example with wine glasses or other types of glasses. This is great for a groomsmen gift or housewarming gift!
